Hayley Shephard's Bio
As an author, adventurer and expedition leader Hayley Shephard has led a life of adventure throughout the world - from the Arctic all the way down to Antarctica.
Sharing her adventures and the lessons they hold is Hayley's passion.
She inspires and motivates every audience with her enthusiasm and energy.
Her honest, heartfelt and humorous story telling, encourages people to strive to fulfill
goals and accomplish dreams, whether professional or personal
Her profession as a teacher extended gradually into the wilderness. From the far south on the frozen Antarctic continent to the Canadian High Arctic and Svalbard in the summer, Hayley as an expedition leader and naturalist leads people into the world’s richest natural environments on wilderness expeditions and nature tours.
She pilots vessels in the remote, northern inlets of the Pacific Northwest and guides people on excursions in grizzly and black bear habitat, as well as leading marine tours in the waterways where killer whales and humpback whales are frequently sighted. She compliments her guiding year with a very sweet month in Churchill as the Polar Bears are passing through this Sub-Arctic town. In Hayley’s earlier guiding career she lead 7-10 day kayaking expeditions in the coastal paradise of Baja in Mexico, and the inside passage of British Columbia, Canada.
In her free time, Hayley has crossed the South American mountains of Peru and Bolivia alone by bicycle, sailed in polar waters and volunteers her time as a research assistant participating in marine mammal transect surveys and studying the Northern resident Orca, their vocalizations and movements throughout the Pacific Northwest. As a writer, her work has been published in a variety of magazines and her book “Leave Only Footprints” is featured in the school curriculum of the US, Canada and New Zealand where Hayley was born and raised.
Hayley was the first woman to solo sea kayak around Vancouver Island (1999) and the Queen Charlotte Islands (2005). In March 2010 she was the first person to attempt a solo kayak journey around the Sub Antarctic Island of South Georgia, raising awareness for the Albatross whose species are rapidly declining worldwide. Following these expeditions she has entertained, enthralled and inspired audiences worldwide with her stunning images and lively story-telling throughout her presentations.
Hayley, a Canadian citizenship currently residing in Northern Vancouver Island is writing her first novel - 'Freedom to Fly' as well as producing a documentary film currently titled 'Soul of the Sea'.
